Image Of the Day caption:
Biologist Phil Alatalo (middle) assists Summer Student Fellow Chloe Wang (left) of Haverford College as she opens up the base of a gravity core during the annual summer cruise for students on WHOI's coastal research vessel, R/V Tioga. Emily Neel (right), a Wellesley College student participating in the Woods Hole Partnership Education Program, waits to put the recovered sediment core into a bucket. By analyzing sediment cores, researchers can learn more about past changes in ocean chemistry and temperatures. Both the Summer Student Fellowship and the Partnership Education Program are designed to give undergraduates hands-on experience in ocean science research through seminars, field trips, independent research projects, and a day-long at-sea experience.
