The two ships were scheduled to leave within minutes of each other. Ultimately Atlantis had mechanical difficulties and Knorr left first.
Craig Lee (UW) cruise to N. Carolina coast.
Investigation of lateral mixing in the upper ocean in regions of strong lateral density contrasts (fronts). We plan to target a period of strong atmospheric forcing (thus late winter or early spring) and progress toward increasingly complex environments. This will be a two-ship operation. One vessel will deploy acoustically-tracked Lagrangian floats and then survey around the drifting float using a towed profiler. The second ship will execute larger-scale surveys around the float drift. One of the two ships (likely the float-following vessel) will release dye. Each evolution will last 1-5 days, with multiple evolutions undertaken during the cruise.

It's rare to see WHOI's two Global Class research vessels, R/V Knorr and Atlantis, in port at the same time. Rarer still to see them leave together on the same cruise. On February 19, Knorr (left) departed just hours before Atlantis (at dock, right) for a three-week cruise off the Carolina coast in one of the roughest times of year. The goal of the project, known as LatMix, is to study the dynamics of mixing and stirring in the upper ocean across the Gulf Stream at scales smaller than the large ocean eddies, but larger than internal waves and convection. Both ships return tomorrow morning, March 17.
