After three weeks in the northern Atlantic in August 2010, WHOI researchers Jeff Hood and Kathryn Rose were greeted at the Woods Hole dock by colleagues, friends and family. They were part of a team directed by chief scientist Lloyd Keigwin collecting long sediment cores off the coast of New England and Canada. Working from the research vessel Knorr, the team used corers to capture long cylinders of seafloor sediment. The longest cores can provide access to deeper, older sediments, and thus a look further back into Earth history. The longest core collected on the cruise was 127 feet (39 meters), almost half the length of a football field.
