WHOI scientist Yogesh Girdhar tests WARP-AUV in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This vehicle is designed to navigate and monitor complex coral reef–like environments autonomously. As 25% of the planet’s coral reefs have vanished over the last 30 years, the funding and tools for studying reefs have not kept pace with these losses. Girdhar is a co-investigator in WHOI’s new Reef Solutions Initiative, which is developing engineering, monitoring, and restoration projects with the aim of initiating a future international coral reef observation and diagnostics network.
