Emerson Hasbrouck, an engineering assistant with WHOI's Upper-Ocean Processes Group, prepares a Stratus buoy for deployment in Valparaiso, Chile. The buoy holds instruments that measure air and sea surface temperatures, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, and precipitation above the surface, as well as sensors that monitor conditions below the waves. These provide a steady stream of data about air-sea interactions and ocean dynamics, helping to gradually improve climate models in the region. WHOI researchers have maintained a moored buoy like this one at 20°S, 85°W, a location 800 miles southwest of Peru, since 2000.
