Caption from 2023 WHOI Wall Calendar, February:
Devil’s Island is a narrow, rocky island with a low valley in the middle and two peaks at either end, giving it the illusion of horns when seen from sea. It is located in a small cove and surrounded by the James Ross Island group, which makes it a sheltered habitat for wildlife, including the Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) pictured here and an Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) colony. These seals were nearly driven to extinction during the 18th and 19th centuries when they were hunted for their fur, but they are now protected and their population has since rebounded.
