The freshly painted bow of the research vessel Knorr gleams in the sunlight at the Atlantic Dry Dock in Jacksonville, Fla., in 2005. The ship was hauled out for deck modifications and other maintenance in preparation for the installation of the new long-coring system. WHOI researchers contributed to extensive research of anti-fouling paints and materials for ocean vessels during World War II, and some of that work continues today.
