Last Thursday we checked in at the Clothing Distribution Center of the U.S. Antarctic Program. The friendly New Zealand staff had filled two bright-orange duffel bags with warm clothes for each of us, and we spent the afternoon making sure they fit properly. In the 75-degree weather and fierce Southern Hemisphere sunshine, it felt silly trying on super-heavyweight socks, fleece underwear, four kinds of gloves, three types of mittens, and a parka that seems heavier than my dog. But walking across the ice this evening, the clothes felt just about right.

The Clothing Distribution Center of the U.S. Antarctic Program in New Zealand provides one-stop shopping for polar explorers. If you are going south on their watch, then you are going to go warm. The friendly New Zealand staff filled two bright-orange duffel bags with super-heavyweight socks, fleece underwear, four kinds of gloves, three types of mittens, and a parka. The hard part was trying it one comfortably in the 75-degree weather and fierce Southern Hemisphere's summer sunshine.
