The 20-student class gathers around instructors Karen Hilton (left center, green hood) and Danny Uhlmann (background left) for insights about staying warm in bed. Hilton's advice: heat up a bottle of water and clamp it between your legs; change your socks; and wedge Big Red -- the giant parkas most students are wearing -- between your sleeping bag and the snow.
Image of The Day caption:
During Polar Discovery Expedition 3 in 2007, scientists and students ventured to Antarctica to study the geology and biology of the southern continent. At the start of the expedition, 20 students experienced Happy Camper School, a two-day program taught to anyone who intends to spend even one night away from McMurdo Station. It's a rite of passage for any Antarctic scientist that includes lessons on how to survive, deal with emergencies, and even remain comfortable in sub-zero, whiteout conditions.
