Date is approximate. Francis ?Frank? Blackwell Mayer (1827-1899). Born in Baltimore, he left there for Philadelphia in 1847, returning 2 years later to become the assistant librarian of the Gallery of Fine Arts of the Maryland Historical Society. Between 1851 and 1863, he traveled the American West, sketching and writing. He lived in Paris from 1863-1870. In 1876, he bought a house in Annapolis (presently occupied by Historic Annapolis, Inc.) He was primarily a genre painter who also did portraits and landscapes, and also wrote on US history. In 1886, he became Vice President of the Anne Arundel County Historical Society. His painting, 'The Burning of the Peggy Stewart' hangs in the Maryland State House, as does the 'Planting of the First Colony in Maryland.' Mayer's association with the State House stems from his having worked towards the end of his life to restore the building to some of its original glory following a long stretch of deterioration and abuse.
