Original date unknown. Caption from Oceanus magazine, vol. 49, no. 2, page 21: Above, 34 feet was added to the middle of the research vessel Knorr during a mid-career refit in 1991. Calendar caption: Research Vessel Knorr Since arriving at WHOI in 1970, Knorr has traveled more than a million miles--the equivalent of forty trips around Earth. During a 1991 overhaul, the ship was cut in half and a 33-foot section added to stretch the vessel to the current length of 279 feet. The length helps Knorr to support and deploy the Long Core, a unique tool developed by WHOI engineers and scientists that takes 150-foot sediment cores from the seafloor--some of the world's longest.
