Research Vessel Knorr
Since arriving at WHOI in 1970, Knorr has traveled more than a million miles--the equivalent of forty trips around Earth. During a 1991 overhaul, the ship was cut in half and a 33-foot section added to stretch the vessel to the current length of 279 feet. The length helps Knorr to support and deploy the Long Core, a unique tool developed by WHOI engineers and scientists that takes 150-foot sediment cores from the seafloor--some of the world's longest.
