Five years before we landed a man on the moon, a stubby white submersible was constructed with the goal of taking people to the bottom of the ocean. The original model of Alvin debuted in 1964. Three people could fit in its six-foot-diameter steel sphere, equipped with small viewports to explore the seafloor.
