Chris Morgan, chief engineer on the research vessel Atlantis, manipulated the remotely operated vehicle Jason at the bottom of the western Caribbean Sea recently while being guided by members of the Jason team.( For three weeks in January, a team of engineers and scientists hat included biologists, geologists, chemists and microbiologists and lead by WHOI geochemist Chris German studied the Mid-Cayman Rise, one of Earth's deepest and most slowly-spreading mid-ocean ridges--regions where two tectonic plates are moving apart. Now back on land, these scientists will spend the coming months analyzing their samples and publishing their results.
