Image Of the Day caption:
In October 2012, crew members from the U.S. Coast Guard ice breaker Healy deployed a small boat to recover a mooring from the Beaufort Sea. The mooring was deployed by WHOI physical oceanographer Bob Pickart as part of an annual survey of the western Arctic and had been been measuring the temperature, salinity, carbon dioxide concentration and velocity of water beneath the surface for the previous year. Analysis of the data will eventually provide valuable insight into the western Arctic boundary current and the surrounding ecosystem.
