James Cameron visits Alvin.
Image Of the Day caption:
On a visit to WHOI in June to deliver his one-of-a-kind submersible, DEEPSEA CHALLENGER, film director and explorer James Cameron (center) had a chance to climb inside the newly minted Alvin personnel sphere with Alvin Operations Manager Pat Hickey (left) and Chris Symons, DEEPSEA CHALLENGE Expedition Science Coordinator. Quite a bit roomier than the 43-inch-diameter sphere he occupied to descend to Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench, the new Alvin sphere also represents an ergonomic upgrade for the pilot and two scientific observers it carries that also provides them with improved fields of view.
