Image Of the Day caption:
A team from WHOI led by Associate Scientist Scott Gallager and the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) recently announced plans to install the first OceanCubes observatory in the coastal waters of Okinawa. OceanCubes unmanned observatories are designed to provide real-time, year-round data to support education and research on biodiversity, biophysical, and geochemical processes, particularly ocean acidification and its impact on coral reef communities. A central node with instruments at four corners of a cubic volume (pictured here with the WHOI/OIST team) house a variety of sensors to allow measurement of carbon and energy moving between the water column and seafloor.
