Image Of the Day caption:
MIT-WHOI Joint Program graduate student Max Kaplan finishes installing a DMON, a broadband digital acoustic recorder developed at WHOI, on a coral reef in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The device, and several other instruments, will remain in place until August to help researchers assess the local marine "soundscape" and differences between healthy and impacted sections of reef. Data collected by the team, which was led by WHOI biologist T. Aran Mooney, could eventually help resource managers and government agencies better understand changes in reef ecosystems and identify areas that may be vulnerable to a changing environment.
