Image Of the Day caption:
A bucket of ice-cold water is the traditional greeting for people returning from their first dive in the submersible Alvin. Here, WHOI data manager Scott McCue is ritually doused aboard the research vessel Atlantis in 2010. McCue, along with Alvin Expedition Leader Bruce Strickrott and geologist Tracy Gregg of the University of Buffalo, explored a mid-ocean ridge near the Galapagos Islands, reaching a depth of more than 1,700 meters (5,600 feet). McCue, who works in the U.S. National Deep Submergence Facility at WHOI, ventured to the seafloor to test one of the subs sonar devices.
