Image Of the Day caption:
Students in a bioacoustics workshop partly run by WHOI scientists Peter Wiebe, Tim Stanton, and Gareth Lawson in July 2013 at Friday Harbor Laboratories watch as a towed sonar system is deployed from the research vessel Centennial. The sonar system, made by BioSonics, Inc. of Seattle, carries two downward-facing transducers that emit sounds at different frequencies. Reflections of the pings can be analyzed to discern the type of organisms in the water and their depth.
