Since its formal commissioning on June 5, 1964, the human-occupied vehicle Alvin has been probing the worlds oceans, providing an up-close look at hydrothermal vents and other features of the previously unknown world of the seafloor. During their May 2014 meeting, WHOI Trustees and Board Members celebrated Alvins 50th anniversary with this cake. Now anyone can join the celebration by visiting a new website that highlights the sub's many accomplishments and invites the public to send Alvin a personalized message.
