Bright sun and shadows from clouds and choppy waves can make spotting marine mammals difficult on a research ship at sea. Here, Dr. Ajith Kumar, of the National Centre for Biological Sciences in India, looks for whales on the R/V Roger Revelle during a 2013 cruise in the Bay of Bengal. Kumar, who directs the centers post-graduate program in wildlife biology and conservation, worked with WHOI biologist Mark Baumgartner to conduct the survey. They also trained scientists from India and Sri Lanka how to conduct at-sea marine mammal surveys during the three-week cruise.
