WHOI retiree Hovey Clifford shows Summer Student Fellows Julia Lanoue (Brown University), Ben Beaumont (North Carolina State University), and Ann Dunham (Dartmouth College), left to right, how to sieve sediment samples taken with a clamshell grab during a day of ocean sampling on board R/V Tioga. Fellows participate in one-day sampling cruises that focus on using both simple sampling gear and more complex instruments like conductivity, temperature, depth (CTD) sensors. During the summer program, fellows also collaborate with scientists or engineers on an independent research project. The Tioga cruises provide hands-on training that is often vital to their specific projects.
