Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 52, No. 1, pg. 23:
At right is PlankZooka, so named for its bazooka like sampling devices mounted on a deep-diving vehicle called Sentry. Engineers couldn't resist painting on a grin to go with the sampler's eyes. Any resemblance to a Minion is coincidental. SUPR-REMUS and PlankZooka are two new systems developed by WHOI scientists and engineers that can be used on autonomous underwater vehicles to collect samples of tiny plankton in the ocean, which play key roles in the marine food web. Traditionally, scientists have used nets, which are not easy to use in many locations that scientists want to investigate.
Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI engineers, together with scientists from Duke University and the University of Oregon Institute recently deployed a novel plankton sampler attached to the autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry from R/V Atlantis. The Sentry Precision Robotic Impeller Driven (SyPRID) sampler gently pumps large volumes of water, and the microscopic organisms it contains, through a net system housed within two carbon fiber composite tubes. The team used the NSF-funded sampler to collect animal larvae and other organisms from above a methane cold seep off the coast of New England. Their work is already changing how scientists think about larvae in the deep ocean.
