Image Of the Day caption:
Arctic researchers often launch their expeditions from Svalbard, Norway, where this statue of Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach both poles, provides inspiration. WHOI biologist Cabell Davis snapped this photo on a recent expedition to the Arctic, where he used a video plankton recorder (VPR), together with plankton net sampling, to study the penetration of Atlantic plankton into the Arctic. The base of the food web, plankton play a major role in the carbon cycle.
