Image Of the Day caption:
The human-occupied vehicle Alvin hitches a ride on a flatbed before being hoisted onto the WHOI-operated research vessel Atlantis in advance of an expedition this summer to explore the depths south of Cape Cod and Nantucket. The National Science Foundation funded the cruise to give 24 early-career scientists experience using Alvin and the autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry. Both vehicles are part of the National Deep Submergence Facility at WHOI, which provides deep-diving vehicles for the broad scientific community. New York Times science reporter Nick St. Fleur was also aboard and posted a Facebook interview with Alvin pilot Anthony Tarantino.
