Renditions of the 2-D flow behind different shapes show that a smooth elliptical cylinder (top) sheds large, coherent vortices, which lead to large vibrations. A contoured whisker shape (bottom), such as a seal whisker, also sheds vortices, but they are less coherent and result in smaller vibrations.
