TRACKING TOP PREDATORS.
Camrin Braun, a graduate student in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, attaches satellite tags to sharks to track the movements and behavior of these top ocean predators. When he and his team find a shark, they have only a few minutes to take blood samples and body measurements, attach a tag, and set the animal loose again. Braun has tracked sharks traveling as much as 10,000 miles and diving more than 3,000 feet.

Image Of the Day caption:
Camrin Braun, a student in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, tracks the behavior of blue and mako sharks, apex predators that maintain oceanic diversity. First, he attaches satellite tags to sharks from a boat with help from fellow scientists and crewmembers. He then tracks the sharks' movements recent names include Buzz, Vader, and Triton through OCEARCHs Global Shark Tracker as they travel up to 10,000 miles from the initial location, often diving more than 3,000 feet to the oceans mesopelagic region before surfacing. Im using sharks to explore parts of the ocean that are difficult to access, Braun says, including the deep ocean.
