Image Of the Day caption:
Hurricanes have left their mark on Cape Cod, and members of the Coastal Systems Group go to great lengths to find evidence of past storms in local ponds and marshes. Here, MIT-WHOI graduate student Katie Castagano (left) and Summer Student Fellow Sophie Ruehr from Yale University assemble a tripod to collect sediment cores from the bottom of Salt Pond near WHOI's Quissett Campus in Falmouth, Mass., and collect samples of sediments. Back in the lab, group members will split, sample, and analyze the cores for signs of storms that hit the region before written records were keptin an effort to understand how climate change may affect the frequency and intensity of storms.
