Image of The Day caption:
Students from Seltjarnarnes Community in Iceland toured the WHOI-operated research vessel Knorr in early October prior to its departure for research in the Irminger Sea. The school is one of five from the U.S., Greenland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom participating in an online expedition, lead by WHOI physical oceanographer Robert Pickart, that concludes October 30. During the voyage, students log on to learn about oceanography and shipboard life by reading daily dispatches prepared in English and Greenlandic. Students also email questions to the scientists and see answers posted to the web site. Questions so far have focused on the size of the ship, the responsibilities of the scientists and crew, and on the stormy weather.
