Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 47, No. 1, Pg. 30:
It's hard to tell the difference among early larval stages of various shellfish. But under polarized light, different species of larvae show different birefringence patterns, depending on the crystal orientation of the calcium-containing minerals that make up their shells. Larvae in later stages of development begin to show body shapes that make them easier to distinguish.
