Arielle Gomes-Williams from Smith College and Matt Takata from Northwestern College prepare a Niskin bottle, a common method for collecting water samples at various depths. They are among 32 undergraduate students participating in this year's WHOI Summer Student Fellowship. Gomes-Williams, who recently completed a science expedition in Bermuda, said her one-day trip on the WHOI research vessel Tioga expanded her knowledge of ship-based marine science research. For Takata, however, everything was new. "The crew let Arielle and I do a lot of the work, so it felt like we were fairly independent in the process," he said.
