Image Of the Day caption:
Kurt Uetz, project manager for the upgrade of the deep submergence vehicle Alvin, snaps a picture of the subs brand-new personnel sphere as it arrives in Woods Hole in June 2012 from Annapolis, Md., where it underwent rigorous testing to ensure it will withstand the pressure at depths of up to 6.5 kilometers. The new sphere has nearly 20 percent greater volume than the previous one, providing more space for its three occupants and equipment. It also has more and larger viewports, a new command and control system, and new lighting and imaging systems. The rebuilt Alvin is scheduled to begin scientific missions later this year.
