In the second of two cruises to study the movement of dense water flowing through the Denmark Strait, WHOI oceanographer Bob Pickart returned to the East Greenland coast this summer to retrieve moorings he and others laid out last year. The moorings, like the one shown, have been measuring temperature, salinity and velocity for the past year across a critical choke point in deep ocean circulation that plays an important role in maintaining Earth's climate. On this year's cruise Pickart and his team used the British ice breaker James Clark Ross to successfully recover 14 moorings and deployed ten more.
