Caption from Down to the Sea for Science, Pg. 99:
One product of the International Geophysical Year (IGY) was "WHOI Bob", a scruffy seagoing oceanographer described in a long poem by Dana Densmore and drawn by Conrad Neumann to help relieve the tedium of "making hydrographic stations, lowering BTs, marking echo-sounder records, correcting thermometer readings, titrating salinities and oxygens, day and night for weeks on end."
