R/V Knorr was build at Defoe Shipbuilding in Bay City, Michigan. She arrived in Woods Hole on 05/29/1970 according to the archived deck log.

In its four decades of operation, R/V Knorr has traveled more than a million miles, from the Galapagos Islands in the equatorial Pacific, to the frigid North Atlantic and many places in between. Here, Knorr is closer to home in the Cape Cod Canal on its first trip to Woods Hole on May 29, 1970. Knorr is best known as the ship that supported WHOI and French researchers when they discovered the wreck of RMS Titanic in 1985. The ship is also home to the long core, which can extract 46-meter plugs of sediment from the seafloor. Knorr will be retired from service in 2015.
