The South African Antarctic base SANAE IV was just the first stop in late 2013 on a lengthy trip for WHOI chemist Phoebe Lam. After a short stay, she boarded the ice breaker SA Aguhlas II for a two-month cruise in the Southern Ocean with an international team that includes meteorologists and marine mammal scientists. Lam's work on the cruise and back at WHOI explores the distribution and type of iron particles in the water that are available to feed phytoplankton
