On recent evening in late January, R/V Atlantis approached the Bridge of the Americas on its way from the Pacific Ocean to the Panama Canal. After a stop in New Orleans, Atlantis will take the newly rebuilt Alvin to the Gulf of Mexico so scientists can take the sub through its paces and test its systems on a series of verification dives. Following that, Alvin will return to full science operations in its fiftieth year of service to the ocean science community.
