Image Of the Day caption:
A tugboat assists the WHOI research vessel Knorr in its March 2013 departure from a jam-packed port in Montevideo, Uruguay. An interdisciplinary team of scientists aboard the DeepDOM cruise investigated the composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in deep water from Uruguay to Barbados. Their findings will paint a biogeochemical picture of the carbon cycle from the ocean's surface to its depths, laying a foundation for future predictions about the processes essential to marine life and the planetary climate system.
