Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI scientist Krista Longnecker built this small-scale electrodialysis system to remove salt from seawater collected during the DeepDOM reseach cruise in the spring of 2013. After running samples from the deep ocean, Longnecker analyzed the remaining organic compounds back in the lab at WHOI using ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry. Her findings could shed light on how organic matter changes as water moves along the global conveyor belt.
