Armed & More Dexterous: After a major upgrade between 2010 and 2013, Alvin returned to service in March 2014 with many enhanced capabilities. Its hydraulic manipulator arms were given a longer reach and the ability to rotate farther to the sides. Pilots use the arms to collect samples and conduct experiments on the seafloor.
