WHOI's coastal research vessel R/V Tioga (left) and a U.S. Coast Guard vessel were among the flotilla that also included three fireboats from neighboring towns escorting R/V Neil Armstrong as it arrived in Woods Hole for the first time yesterday. The 238-foot Armstrong is the newest and most advanced ship in the U.S. academic research fleet and is operated by WHOI for use by the oceanographic community. In welcoming the ship and its crew, many of whom served on R/V Knorr, home to Woods Hole, WHOI President and Director Mark Abbott said: "While its true a ship in port is safe, thats not what ships are built for. We always wish you smooth sailing when you leave, well think about you when youre gone, and welcome you when you return.
