The organisms above shaped like 8s with hairlike cilia around them are Mesodinium rubrum. They usually grow by eating algae (as the one on the left is doing). But M. rubrum can also steal cellular machinery from algae and use it to make food via photosynthesis. Left: Postdoctoral fellow Holly Moeller studies these remarkable organisms.
