Preparing for emergencies at sea is a serious matter, and every research cruise starts with a safety training for the scientists on board. Still, it's hard not to smile watching graduate students Adrian Garcia, Emmanuel Codillo, and Rui Chen (right to left) try on the bulky, bright orange survival gear known as gumby suits. Garcia, Codillo, and Chen were among 20 MIT-WHOI Joint Program students to participate in a Student Orientation Cruise this past Septemberthe first aboard WHOI's newest research vessel, the Neil Armstrong. Funded by the Armstrong endowment, the cruise introduces new graduate students to shipboard life and the basic techniques and equipment involved in oceanographic research.
