Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 53, No. 2, pg. 23:
Mara Freilich grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. When she was very young, she was afraid of the ocean but soon came to love spending time outdoors hiking, backpacking, biking, and kayaking. She became fascinated with ocean microbes at a course she attended with her grandparents, when she looked under a microscope at seawater she had collected. Her instructor told her that some of the species hadnt yet been identified, and she was hooked on oceanography. In college, she majored in applied mathematics and now enjoys being able to combine mathematical models and fieldwork. Her Ph.D. advisor is WHOI oceanographer Amala Mahadevan, and her mentor for this article was Ken Kostel, WHOI director of research communications. Image also used inside front cover for student stories index.
