Graduate students in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program play a few rounds of cards in the galley aboard the research vessel Neil Armstrong. They were returning to port after a research cruise planned and orchestrated by the students. For the past two years, the Armstrong Endowment at WHOI has helped fund a cruise designed to give new graduate students an opportunity to get to know the Armstrong crew, meet their peers in other marine science fields, learn about techniques and equipment outside of their usual fields, and experience firsthand the challenges of planning and running research operations at sea.
