R/V Atlantis second mate Max Kantor swims next to the autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry during the vehicle’s recovery from a test dive in 2018. As an autonomous vehicle, Sentry operates without human intervention as deep as 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) and with a long—and growing—list of sensors to support physical, chemical, and biological studies of the ocean and seafloor.
