Caption from 2021 WHOI Wall Calendar, September:
WHOI’s famous human-occupied submersible, Alvin, typically works year-round, giving scientists an in-person window on the deep. But from spring 2020 to fall 2021, the sub is back in Woods Hole for an overhaul. WHOI engineers are giving Alvin a new superpower: the ability to dive to 6,500 meters (21,000 feet )—2,000 meters deeper than before. At this depth, scientists will be able to explore 98% of the ocean floor. New, improved Alvin should be heading out for sea trials this fall.
