Caption from 2020 Wall Calendar, back cover:
This large framework-building stony coral (Enallopsammia pusilla) was found 625 meters (~2,050 feet) deep on the side of Orona Atoll within the Phoenix Island Protected Area in Kiribati. This colonial hard coral was over one meter (three feet) wide and hosted more than 10 different invertebrate species, including spiny sea urchins, dynomenid crabs, Astrothrombus brittle stars, and comatulid sea lilies, or feather stars. The mission to explore this remote region in the central Pacific was led by Erik Cordes, Randi Rotjan, and WHOI’s Tim Shank aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s R/V Falkor.
