Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 46, No. 3, Pg. 19:
Soule uses a device called LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), which beams a laser in a precise swath across the landscape. Reflections from every point the laser hits provide that point’s precise location. More than 3.5 million points collected by the LIDAR were gridded at 5-centimeter resolution to produce the digital terrain model shown here.
