Under the ice.
Palmer Station, Antarctica—WHOI biologist Scott Gallager spent six weeks at Palmer Station this spring, surveying and selecting offshore locations to deploy the Polar Remote Interactive Marine Observatory. PRIMO, scheduled for installation in late 2005, will be the first cabled observatory moored under Antarctic ice. It will monitor the ecosystem for a year, measuring water properties, recording images and sounds of nearby animals, and transmitting data via cable and satellite to scientists worldwide.
